State law requires every school in Texas to have an armed security officer on campus during school hours. Officers can be hired from local law enforcement agencies, a security company, or commissioned peace officers. There is no provision in the law for districts to use volunteers or retired military for this requirement.

The total cost for NISD to comply with this law is $2.5 million. The state of Texas provided $875,000.

Most agree the law is a good idea but it is clearly an unfunded mandate because the district is required to foot the bill for $1.6 million.
